Chalk paint brushes come in wide variety of shapes and sizes and range from low-end (throw aways) to high-end (Annie Sloan) brushes. My goal is to show that there are plenty of mid-range brushes that make great alternatives to the more expensive brush brands, so I'm only going to be ranking mid-range brushes. If you are looking for a review on premium brands, with more stringent quality requirements, this likely isn't the article for you. This wil be an apple to apple comparison, not apple to orange. : ) Ok, got it?

Wow! When our Vintage Tonality Pro Chalk and Wax Paint Brush Set arrived I was blown away with the packaging. It arrived in a beautiful vintage kraft box. The box was sturdy and had clear instructions on the backside for prepping the brushes. I love how well thought out the set was arranged. Someone obviously thought about the customer experience and put together a nice package. I hadn't realized when I purchased the set that so many nice and useful extras would be included.
The Vintage Tonality brush set came with three (3) brushes so I decided to choose a project (mid-size dresser) that would utilize all three. The larger 2" diameter bristle head brush held a lot paint with its thick dense bristles, applied smoothly and provided a lot of paint coverage with each stroke. After a couple uses the soft bristles tips offered more flexibility which created a smoother and even finish without extra effort. Normally, I would apply at least 3 coats when using a much lighter chalk paint color over a darker surface but with this brush it took just 2 coats. The two smaller brushes, especially the tapered brush, came in handy with those hard to reach areas. I prefer to keep my chalk and wax brush separate but since they cleaned up so nicely (set includes cleaning soap) I decided to use them again for applying a clear and dark wax to my dresser.
I've used these brushes for several projects and they keep getting better with each use. At first the natural bristles were a little on the stiff side but didn't effect their overall performance. The bristles were densely packed and securely held within the ferrule and an epoxy wax. I used the bristle cleaning and conditioning soap after every use and they near perfect to what I would expect from a higher-end brush. I did have a couple loose bristles at first, but what natural hair paint brush doesn't shed a few bristles. Over time and prepping the brush before each use I have had no issue with bristle loss.
I have smaller hands but each brush fit comfortabily in my hand, even the larger brush. The handle offers a solid foundation grip onto while maneuvering the extra-large head. With several hours of use my only complaint was the leather hanging strap. When painting harder to reach areas the strap could get in the way. The easiest solution was to remove the straps when painting.
Vintage Tonality made cleaning my brushes super easy. The Pro set includes their popular bristle cleaning and conditioning soap and boy does it work. I should also mention that it's available as separate purchase as well. Besides smelling terrific, it removed chalk paint and wax with ease. Even with dried on chalk paint left on from another project, the soap and bristles had my brushes looking like new.
Shortly after receiving my brushes, Vintage Tonality was quick to reach out to make sure I was happy with my set. They provided information on their waranty (30-day) and information for prepping my brushes for using them. I was also impressed with the maintenance guide that was included with the set as well. Their website had tons of information which I didn't find from the other brands I've reviewed. Clearly, Vintage Tonality cares about their customers and their experience.
If you took all of the items included with the set you would pay at least double or triple the cost if your purchased them separately. As I mentioned above, a lot of thought was put in to this set and what you get is a great set at a great value.
